CHAPTER NINETEEN

Kol and me stayed in that embrace for so long I had stopped keeping count. My mind was a mess, thinking about Kol’s demise, the Norns, and then, of course, the end of the world. The most important thought to me was trying to secure an apple for Kol. I couldn’t believe that he was dying because of my recklessness.

Ragnarök was my fault.

“Are you ready to head back?” Kol whispered in my ear, kissing below my lobe.

I sighed heavily. “Not really no.”

“I know.” He hugged me a little tighter. “I want to stay like this forever.”

Wiggling off his lap, I swam back over to our clothes. Kol had hoisted himself up from the seat, using a towel to dry himself. He threw me one before coming over to grab his clothes. Dressed, I combed my hair with my fingers before I followed him back into that small cave entrance.

Kol and I emerged from the crevice to find Magnar, Fenrir, Brokkr and Eitri waiting for us. My face flamed and I ducked my head to hide my shame. Hopefully they hadn’t heard anything, but seeing Fen not meeting my eye meant he had heard everything that had transpired.

Brokkr jabbed his thumb in Magnar’s direction. “God of Thunder over here told us that you’re looking for the Norns.”

Kol shot his brother a look, but Magnar shrugged, arms folded over his chest. “What else was I going to say? None of us know where the Norns are.”

“And you thought they’d know?” Kol shot back.

“They,” Brokkr glowered. “Know someone that does.”

Kol winced. “I meant no offense.”

Eitri put his hand on Brokkr’s shoulder. “Ignore him. He gets upset rather quickly.”

“I’m right here you know!” Brokkr shouted.

Eitri rolled his eyes. “Anyway, yes, we have an idea as to where the Norns are. We think Bodil might know, she’s one of the oldest Elves in the Nine Realms.”

Kol cocked his head. “I hadn’t considered that.”

“Bodil could know exactly where they are,” Brokkr continued. “Or she could know a general location.”

I glanced at Kol. “It’s worth a shot.”

He nodded. “It is. We need to get going then.”

Eitri’s brows furrowed. “Shouldn’t you rest while you’re here?”

“We’ve little time,” Magnar replied. “I can feel the change in the air as we speak.”

“A nap would be nice though,” Kol whined. “But we’ll have plenty of time to rest if we loose.”

I elbowed him. “Enough.”

He sighed. “I know. That was rather stupid of me to say.”

Brokkr set his hands on his hips. “We’re going with you.”

Kol frowned. “I don’t think we need an entourage.”

“No,” Eitri chimed in. “But we want to do our part to in stopping the end of the world.”

“Fair enough.” Magnar brushed by Kol, gesturing for us to follow. “We need to get back to the top. I can’t use my hammer’s portal in here.”

Our gang followed the God of Thunder back up to the mountain’s entrance. We waited for the Dwarves to open up the door before stepping back out onto the mountains peak. A cold gust of wind sent a chill down my spine.
